Let’s Cook Together: Simple Steps

Here’s how to make this dish, with ideas for getting children involved:

  1. Preheat: Turn your oven to 200°C. Kid Task: Older children can help set the oven temperature with supervision.
  2. Prep Veggies: Place tomatoes, onions, garlic, red pepper and olive oil in the baking dish. Kid Task: Younger children can help wash tomatoes or place pre-chopped items in the dish.
  3. Season: Sprinkle with salt and pepper; mix gently. Kid Task: Let them do the sprinkling!
  4. Add Cheese & Bacon: Place the cream cheese block in the centre. Add crispy bacon around it (if using). Kid Task: Carefully placing the cream cheese.
  5. Bake: Place the dish in the oven for 30 minutes.
  6. Cook Pasta: While the sauce bakes, cook pasta in the large pot following packet instructions. Kid Task: Stirring pasta occasionally (use caution near hot water).
  7. Drain Pasta: Drain pasta, keeping about 150ml (¾ cup) of the cooking water.
  8. Mix Sauce: Carefully remove the baking dish. Stir well. Gently mash softened tomatoes with a fork into the melted cheese. Kid Task: Mashing soft tomatoes (once slightly cooled) is fun!
  9. Combine: Stir the reserved pasta water into the sauce. Add spinach and basil; stir until spinach wilts.
  10. Finish: Add cooked pasta to the dish. Mix thoroughly until coated.
  11. Serve: Dish up immediately. It goes well with a green salad. Enjoy your easy family pasta recipe!
